Isabelle Holmes Windsor, 93, of Mount Airy, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012.

Born Aug. 15, 1919, she was the daughter of George Pemberton Holmes and Theresa Alice Williams Holmes, of Tannersville, Va. She was married to James I. Windsor, of Mount Airy for 32 years prior to his death in 1973.

She cooked and cleaned for her father and brothers after her mom died when she was 13. She then moved to live with her brother in Mount Airy, where she went to high school.

She married Jim Windsor in 1941. Four of her brothers became Mount Airy residents Edward and Mamie Holmes; Fred and Janie Holmes; Henry and Ruth Holmes; and Starritt and Eunice Holmes, who became permanent residents and business owners in the town.

She was a homemaker and active volunteer in Mount Airy. She joined the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary in 1952 and continued to serve for 60 years. She was also a member of Calvary United Methodist Church.

She worked as a cafeteria assistant in Mount Airy schools for several years after her children were older, followed by employment with National Geographic and later worked as a dietary cook for Pleasant View Nursing Home until her retirement. She enjoyed visiting friends and fellow volunteers.

Surviving are children James Ronald Windsor and wife Nancy, of Winfield; Judith Ann Albright and husband Granville, of Mount Airy; grandchildren Lisa McMillan and husband Dave, of Baltimore; Lois Windsor-Buchanan and husband Rich, of Westminster; and Victoria Taylor and husband Patrick, of Gaithersburg; great-grandchildren Mason and Mable Windsor-Buchanan, of Westminster; and David, Elizabeth, Daniel and Joseph McMillan, of Baltimore, and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her siblings.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville, Blvd. in Mount Airy.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ann Schlossnagle officiating. Interment Pine Grove Cemetery.
