James Barnett Etherton, 83, of Westminster, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at home.

Born Nov. 9, 1929, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Ernest Etherton and Emma Barnett Etherton. He was the husband of Sherry Williamson Etherton, who he married April 21, 1956, his wife of 56 years.

He served in the Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He was a graduate of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and attended the University of Maryland. Before retiring, he was an automobile claims adjuster, a U.S. Postal Service Employee, and worked for the Social Security Administration for many years. After his retirement, he worked as a real estate agent. 

He was a member of the Keystone Masonic Lodge No. 153 in Linwood, N.J., Boumi Temple Shrine Chanters, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of Baltimore and New Jersey and National Active and Retired Federal Employees. He served as a chairperson on the Carroll Lutheran Village Food and Dining Committee.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children Stephen E. Etherton, of Mays Landing, N.J., and Sandra E. Potter, of Frederick; grandchildren Kathleen Hoffman and husband Ryan, Andrew Ehterton, Stephanie Etherton, Christopher Potter and wife Jillian, Alessandra Potter-Gergel and husband Andrew Gergel; and great-grandchildren Sareah Watt, Bryna, Chelsea and Natalee Potter and Lucas Hoffman.

He was predeceased by siblings Albert Etherton, Florence Kelly, and the Rev. Donald Etherton.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service, 2 p.m Saturday at Carroll Lutheran Village, Krug Chapel, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, with the Rev. Jimmie Schwartz officiating. Inurnment will be private at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Shriners Hospital For Children, Boumi Temple, 5050 King  Ave., Baltimore, MD 21237.
