James Edward Diehl Sr., 78, of Sykesville, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at Carroll Hospice's Dove House in Westminster.

Born May 20, 1935, in Hampstead, he was the son of the late Harry Richard Diehl and Beulah Elizabeth Shaffer Diehl. He was the husband of Frances L. Constantine Diehl, his wife of 56 years.

He was a stationary engineer for the State of Maryland for 30 years and worked at Little Sisters of the Poor for 14 years.

He was a long time trustee at Wards Chapel United Methodist Church and over saw church maintenance. He enjoyed working in the yard and tinkering in his garage.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children and spouses Diane and Kelley Gordon, of Westminster, Janice and Joe McCleary, of Florida, James E. Diehl Jr., of Sykesville, Terry and Tony Cimino, of Mount Airy, and Connie and Don Gabriel, of Federalsburg; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and siblings Kenneth Diehl, of Texas, David Diehl, of Baltimore and Evelyn Holmes, of Hanover, Pa.

He was predeceased by a sister, Hilda Gunter; and a brother, Ralph Diehl.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Gardens.
