James Joseph Schwartz, 95, of Finksburg, died on November 17, 2017 at his home. Born April 8, 1922, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Francis H. and Mary Patterson Schwartz. He was the husband of June Murray Schwartz, his loving wife of 68 years. He retired in 1985 as a Government and Community Relations Manager for Bell Atlantic Corporation (formerly Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co.) where he had worked for 37 years. He had been Business Office manager for 25 years, including 10 years in Westminster. The native of Irvington graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in Baltimore and had attended Johns Hopkins University. He was a WWII veteran and had served in Europe where he was awarded the French Medal of Honor. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Roaring Run Lions Club (recipient of the 55-year Monarch Chevron Award), VFW, Carroll Co. Commission on Aging, Telephone Pioneers, Past President of Carroll Co. Chamber of Commerce, Past Chairman of Carroll Co. Agri-Business Club, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Carroll County Farm Museum, Member and Chairman of Carroll Co. Planning and Zoning Commission, a member of the Baltimore Regional Planning Council, a Board Member of Junior Achievement, Chairman of McDaniel and CC Community College Annual Fund, Heart Association and Member of the Board of Directors of Carroll Co. Land Trust and served as a District Court Commissioner for Carroll County. He was a parishioner of St. John Catholic Church, had served on the finance committee and had been a Lector and Extraordinary Minister for over 30 years. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons James J. (Dawn) of San Luis Obispo, CA, John F. (Joni) of Fort Myers, FL, and Stephen M. (Kim) of Parkton, MD. He is also survived by daughters Denise A. (Mike) Harbin, of Williamsburg, VA, M. Catherine Zahn (Mike) of St. Petersburg, FL, Elizabeth M. Schwartz of Towson, and Susan (David) Wells of Baltimore. His brother, Edward Schwartz, survives him. He also leaves seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by siblings Frank Jr., Paul, Robert, Gordon, Charles and Walter Schwartz, and Kathleen Tevis. The family will receive friends on Monday, November 20, 2017 from 3- 5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John Catholic Church, Westminster on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 10:45 a.m. with Father Mark Bialek as celebrant. Entombment with military honors will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
