James Reece Bowen, a retired electrical engineer with Westinghouse died at age 87 of complications from kidney disease on June 6 at Carroll Lutheran Health Center. A longtime resident of Columbia, Maryland, he moved five years ago to Carroll Lutheran Village retirement community in Westminster with his wife of 61 years, Mary Jeannette (née Kight), the love of his life. Jim was born and raised in Perryville Arkansas to parents Caroline Virginia Hall and Earl Lange Bowen. After high school, he enlisted in the Army Signal Corps where he was assigned to the 97th Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion stationed in the Territory of Hawaii and later worked at the WTJ Transmitter Station. Upon discharge, Jim enrolled at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. He was awarded the high honor of induction into the Key society of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK). Jim's love of country led him to travel to all fifty states, as well as Canada and Europe. He enjoyed photography, woodworking and sharing the passions of his grandchildren. Jim is survived by four daughters, all of Howard County, Maryland; Susan Anne Bowen and husband Raymond Maurice Rankin, Elizabeth Bowen Kelly and husband Owen J. Kelly III, Laura Bowen Cassard and husband Richard Stevens Cassard, and Martha Catherine Bowen and Mark Miller of Westminster. In addition, he leaves eight grandchildren: Caroline Kelly, O. Joseph Kelly, Jacqueline Cassard Alyea and her husband Dylan McCann Alyea, Samuel Cassard, Maureen Kelly, Ariana Cassard, Leslie Anne Rankin and Virginia Margaret Rankin. His brother, Richard Jerome Bowen of Perryville Arkansas preceded him in death. The family will receive visitors at the Krug Chapel at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster on Friday, June 10th from 2-4pm. Funeral services will be held at Linden Linthicum United Methodist Church in Clarksville on Saturday, June 11th at 12 noon with visitation at 11 am. In lieu of flowers the family requests donation to be made in Jim's name to Linden Linthicum United Methodist Church Music Fund or Carroll Lutheran Village Residents' Fund.
