James Joel Spence, 79, of Westminster, died Sunday, November 26, 2017, at the Dove House. Born January 10, 1938 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Raymond Louis Spence and Helen Julia Jahnke Spence. Survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carole Ann Spence. Before retiring he worked at Sparrows Point Shipyard, Mechanic at Alban Tractor, Western Electric, Mechanic at Afco Thompson Steel Mill, and worked for 21 years as an Electrician and in Maintenance for the Carroll County Board of Education. He was a member of the Door to Virtue Masonic Lodge #46 AF&AM, the Train Collectors Association 65-1382, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Smallwood. He served in the Coast Guard and his hobbies were Toy Trains and Woodworking. Besides his wife he is survived by his son/brother-in-law L.D. Chip Novakowski and wife Debbie and also survived by nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster and at the church Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Door to Virtue Masonic Lodge will conduct a Masonic Memorial Service Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 833 Deer Park Rd. Westminster, with Deacon Melissa Helfer officiating. Interment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, 833 Deer Park Rd.
