James William Shugars Sr., 77, of Sykesville, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

Born Jan. 30, 1936, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Alvin M. Shugars and Ruth N. Hauk Shugars. He was the husband of Barbara Lee Gurdison Shugars, his wife of 56 years.

He was a 1967 graduate of the University of Maryland, where he majored in business administration and carried minors in sociology and psychology. He was a 1991 graduate of Luther Rice Seminary in Jacksonville, Fla., where he earned a Master of Divinity.

He was a retired computer system analyst for the Social Security Administration. Before his illnesses, he sang in different church choirs and was a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of Mount Airy Baptist Church in Mount Airy.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid fisherman and home team's sports fan. He enjoyed sharing the gospel message to those he came in contact with.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children James Shugars Jr. and wife Theresa, of Westminster, and Susan Anne Shugars, of Hampstead; siblings Betty Jean Parker, and Mozelle V. Judge and husband James, all of Sykesville; numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and grandchildren Eric James Shugars and Stephanie Ann Shugars, both of Westminster.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Keith Vincent officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park in Sykesville.
