Jane Elizabeth Burkhart, 75, of Sykesville, died Tuesday, July 17, 2012, after an extended illness.
Born May 18, 1937, in Rochester, N.Y.,she was the daughter of the late Gordon L. and Valerie E. Pfohl. She was the wife of Charles "Bud" Burkhart, her husband of 49 years.
She was raised in Buffalo, N.Y. She was a graduate of Concordia Teachers College in Illinois and she had taught for many years, including Pilgrim Christian Day School. She had also run a licensed in-home daycare, and most recently, Happy Acres Preschool, and was known as the resident "grandmother."
She was an active member of their church, Faith Lutheran in Eldersburg, teaching Sunday school and Confirmation for more than 20 years, as well as leading many Bible studies at South Carroll Senior Center in more recent years.
She could also be found many mornings swimming laps at Merritt Health Club.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are children Dave Burkhart, of Lusby, Cathey and husband Walt McGee, of New Windsor, Charley Burkhart, of Walkersville, Bob and wife Jill Burkhart, of San Jose, Calif., and Matt and wife Melissa Burkhart, of Frederick; grandchildren Timothy, Luke, Kaitlin, Kayla, Jessica, Ella, Owen, and Ethan; brother and sisters-in-law Robert and Joy Pfohl, of Wheatfield, N.Y., and Gloria Pfohl, of Orchard Park, N.Y.
She was predeceased by a brother, Donald Pfohl.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church, 1700 St. Andrews Way, Eldersburg. Interment will be private.
