Janice Mary "Jan" Mazzaro, 88, of Westminster, passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at Carroll Hospice Dove House. Jan was born on November 14, 1928 in New York City, NY. She was the daughter of the late Michael Foley and Mary (Lyons) DeMare, and step-daughter of the late James DeMare. She was the beloved wife for 40 years to Anthony Mazzaro, who predeceased her in December of 1998. Jan began her working career as an actress off Broadway in New York City, NY, in addition to being in on the ground floor of the burgeoning television media. This ignited a passion for theatre that she carried with her throughout her life. She graduated in 1950 from New York University with a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Education. She taught in several schools in the Baltimore area. Always wanting to stay busy, she worked during retirement as a substitute teacher and at Waldenbooks in Owings Mills. Jan was an avid reader and enjoyed writing short stories. She also directed several community theatre productions throughout Maryland and left many impressionable memories among those she directed. Surviving her are daughters Nikki Ratti and Lesley Telfort of Westminster; grandchildren Kyle Ratti of Westminster and Jordan Ratti of Cookeville, TN; brother-in-law George Mazzaro of Aurora, OH; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 22, 2017 from 10 am until the start of funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Rd., Westminster with Carroll Hospice Chaplain Nancy Ginsberg officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family would like to express their gratitude for the loving care for Jan that was provided by the staff at Inspirations Memory Care of Westminster. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Carroll Hospice Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster MD 21157.
