Jerry W. Pownall, 75 of Hanover, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family and friends on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at home. He was the loving fiancé of Margaret E. "Marty" Brown for 19 years. Born January 8, 1942 in Cumberland, MD, he was a son of the late John A. and Wilda F. (Malone) Pownall. Jerry was a graduate of Romney High School in West Virginia class of 1960; while he lived in West Virginia he was a Sunday School teacher. From 1960 to 1970, Jerry worked at a shoe factory in Maine; in 1970 he came back to Maryland and worked for Kibler Construction and 28 years with White Pine Construction, retiring in 1998, and once retired he went into business for himself. Jerry was a lifetime member of Beaver Run Fish and Game Club and a member of Hanover Moose Lodge #227; he was involved in race clubs for classic and street cars during which he raced up and down the east coast. Jerry was an avid NASCAR fan; his favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt, Sr. In addition to his fiancée, Jerry is survived by his children, Alfred Pownall of Lewistown, ME, Michael Pownall of Mechanic Falls, ME, Rodney Pownall of Portland, ME, John Pownall of NH, Sherry Pownall of Chicago, IL; step children, Tammy Smith of Hanover, PA, Ronnie Brown of Harrisburg, PA, Marty Brown of Zanesville, OH, Candace Brown of Jacksonville, FL; siblings, Danny Pownall of Airville, PA, Nina DePasquale of Dayton, OH, Gayle Jarboe of Baltimore, MD; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Pownall. A service to celebrate the life of Jerry will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 11, 2017 at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA with Rev. Dave Miller officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Thursday from 6-9 p.m. and then again on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
