Joan Holmes Rogers of Westminster, MD, formerly of Irwin Pa, died on Tuesday May 10, 2016 at her home with her family around her. Joan was born August 11, 1930 in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Col. Don N. Holmes and Dixie Rothel (Lamb) Holmes. She spent much of her early life traveling the United States and the world with her military family. Joan spent much of her adult life living in Irwin, PA. She was an elementary school teacher for the Hempfield Area School District, for 35 years. During that time, she enjoyed sharing the joy of learning with her students. She spent many hours preparing lessons, designing and making colorful bulletin boards and designing exercises to help make learning interesting and fun. In her retirement she volunteered many hours in her old school, West Hempfield Elementary. Joan's passion was sewing. As her children grew she made many of the clothes they wore. She could make anything from infant clothing, to dresses, to full three-piece suits for men, to the wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses for her daughters' weddings. After retiring from teaching she made clothing and accessories for American Girl Dolls which she sold at many juried craft fairs in Western PA and Eastern Ohio. She was a member of the local Red Hat club and a group of sewing enthusiasts, the Sew and Sews. In addition to sewing she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, needlepoint, quilting, and furniture refinishing. Her needlecraft items often won prizes at the annual 4-H fair in Westmoreland County, PA. In her spare time she enjoyed the challenge of crossword puzzles. Joan is survived by her loving family which includes: her beloved sister Anne Matter of Baltimore, her children David Rogers and wife Nancy of Westminster, Sheri-Anne Woolman and husband Eric of Westminster, Kevin Rogers and wife Marcy of Traverse City, Michigan, Jennifer Rogers of Westminster, and foster son Sergio Cortez and wife Veronica of Miami, Florida. She has twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren, two nieces and a nephew. She will be missed by all friends and family who love her. An informal gathering of friends and family will be held at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services in Westminster, MD on May 16 beginning at 4PM followed by a memorial service. After the memorial service, a reception will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 65 Washington Rd., Westminster. Friends and family are invited to celebrate her life with food and fellowship. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be to the Humane Society of the United States or an animal rescue group of one's choice.
