John Charles Stevens Sr., 68, of Sykesville, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.

Born Feb. 27, 1945, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Howard Wilbert and Marie M. Lindauer Stevens. He was the husband of Linda Ann Nester Stevens, of Sykesville.

He was retired from the State of Maryland as a corrections officer where he had served as a captain. After his retirement from the state, John worked at several part-time jobs as a school bus driver for Howard County and as a dispatcher for Frederick County Schools. During his career, he worked several part-time jobs as a bartender at the American Legion, Sykesville Post 223, at the former Euler's Liquors and at the former American Pizza. He was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church and Freedom Lodge #112 A.F. & A.M. He was a graduate of Carroll Community College.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons and daughter-in-law John C. Stevens Jr., of Sykesville, Robert J. and Cherie Stevens, of Sykesville, and Aaron E. Andrews, of Westminster; daughter and son-in-law Carol E. Stevens and Jeff Bethea, of Sykesville; and grandchildren Darby Leigh Nobles-Stevens, Payton Marie Stevens and Aidan James Stevens.

He was predeceased by sisters Edna Blanche Goodman and Marsha Holt.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park.
