John Edgar Koontz, 91, of Westminster, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at Carroll Hospice's Dove House.

Born Aug. 20, 1922, in New Windsor, he was the son of the late Edgar William and Rita M. Hyde Koontz. He was the husband of Helen R. Goulden Koontz, who died May 27, 2012.

He was a retired Maryland State Police captain and a former barrack commander in Westminster.

He graduated from New Windsor High School and then served in the Navy on the Battleship Missouri right after World War II ended. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church and was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are children Sharon R. Fabian, of Fredericksburg, Va., Jay E. Koontz, of Westminster, Michael J. Koontz, of Jefferson, and Linda H. Brady, of Hagerstown; a brother, Paul Koontz, of Assateague; grandchildren Andy and Jeff Fabian, Rachel Wagner, Jon and Jason Koontz, and Kathy and Michele Brady; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by brothers Bob Koontz and Kenny Grimes; and sisters Margaret Murray and Reba Leister.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster, with the Rev. John Lesnick officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
