John Evan Richards, 92, died peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Dove Hospice Center in Westminster.

Born on Feb. 19, 1920, in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of Edgar Evan and Margaret Lewis Richards. He was the husband of Jane Davis Richards, his wife of 59 years who died hours later at Carroll Hospital Center on Nov. 29.

He grew up with his three sisters in Ohio and later moved to the Washington, D.C. area with his family. He served in the Army Air Corps as staff sergeant during World War II and later in the Reserves.

He spent the majority of his career as an optician at Franklin Opticians in Washington, D.C., while residing in Kensington. He and his wife retired in Ocean Pines. During retirement, he enjoyed fishing and playing with his grandchildren.

He and his wife later moved to Carroll Lutheran Village.

Surviving are children JoAnn Richards; Jim Richards and wife Liza; Judy McDonald and husband Terry; grandchildren Bobby, Andrew and wife Kate, Megan, Nicole, Amy, Nathan, Sean and Gracie; and great-grandchildren Elizabeth and Sean.

A memorial service for him and his wife will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Carroll Lutheran Chapel in Westminster.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Carroll Lutheran Village, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, MD 21158 or Dove Care Hospice Center, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
