John M "Jack" Johnston, 81, of Sykesville, Md died Nov 7, 2018 at Dove House, of complications due to a stroke. Born Sept 1937 in Beaver Falls, PA, he was the son of John M and Ruth McClure Johnston. He was the husband of Emily Jacobson Johnston, his wife of 50 years. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are son Arne and daughter-in-law Mary, and their children Kyle and Devin, of DeWitt, MI; sister Judy and husband Robert Croft, of Panama City, FL; and cat Willis. He and his wife were active grape growers, owning and operating Copernica Vineyards in Westminster for nearly 30 years. He was the editor of the quarterly newsletter for the Maryland Grape Growers Association for about 15 years. Jack and Emily established a local chapter of the American Wine Society in 1980, and were responsible for the wine-education seminars at The Maryland Wine Festival since its inception. There will be no services. Anyone wanting to commemorate him may make a donation to the S.A.M. Fund, sponsored by the Johnstons to support music and arts education for children in Carroll County. The fund is held by the Community Foundation of Carroll County, 255 Clifton Blvd, Ste 313, Westminster, Md 21157. Donations can also be made to Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave, Westminster MD 21157.
