John Lelian Hope, 93, of Westminster, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at home.

Born Nov. 8, 1920, in West Fork, Ark., he was the son of the late John and Nita Hope. He was the husband of Eunice Mae Hope, his wife of nearly 65 years, who died Dec. 12, 2010.

He served four years aboard a destroyer escort during World War II, and immediately after the war, on Christmas Eve 1945, he married his wife. 

Before retiring he worked as a custom carpenter for Brown Engineering in Annapolis. He enjoyed growing flowers, working with his hands, reading and sharing time with his family.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Hope, of Westminster; son and daughter-in-law Steven and Laura Hope, of Catonsville; granddaughters Lisa German and Laurie Hawkins, of Ferndale, and Allyson Hope, of Frederick; a grandson, Jason Rolfe, of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by sisters Chloedell, Billy and Fairlie; and brother Carl Hope.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Charles Beekley officiating. Interment will follow at Meadow Branch Cemetery in Westminster.
