John Nicholas Reininger Sr., 90, of Westminster, died Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center in Westminster.

Born Sept. 8, 1922, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Marie Tilger Reininger and John Paul Reininger. Twice married, he was the husband of the late Frances M. Pitsinger Reininger, his wife of 35 years; and the husband of Thelma Kathryn "Kate" Reininger, his wife of 31 years.

He served with the Merchant Marines during World War II from January 1943 through August 1945. He was employed by Exxon Corporation for 34 years as office manager. He also worked as a bookkeeper at Grace Lutheran Church in Westminster, and at a large condo in Seminole, Fla.

For five years he and his wife Kate served as full-time volunteers at a large food bank in Coal Mountain, W.Va. (Appalachia). He was a member of St. Benjamin's Lutheran Church in Westminster and enjoyed reading, traveling and watching history events on television. He was a Ravens fan and also enjoyed getting together with his family.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children Regina D. Soter and husband Ronald, of Taneytown, Angela K. Lorenzo and husband Anthony, and John N. Reininger Jr. and wife Susan, all of Abingdon, and Jane F. Cole and husband John, of Carney; stepchildren John I. Cole, of Carney, William I. Cole and wife Mary, of Manchester, and Julie M. Allen and husband Steve, of Hampstead; a brother, Alvin Reininger, of California; grandchildren John and Eric Soter, Lauren Walker, Adam, Jason, Michael and Andrew Reininger, Nicholas Pedone and Sara Smoley; and great-grandchildren Nolan and Caroline Soter, Ryan and Alexander Baker, Rachel and Jackson Walker, Savannah and Lucas Soter, Matthew Pedone and Benjamin Smoley.

He was predeceased by three sisters and three brothers.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of a memorial service, 1 p.m. Saturday at Carroll Lutheran Village, Krug Chapel, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, with the Rev. David Schafer and Chaplain Jimmie Schwartz officiating. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to The Residents Assistance Fund at Carroll Lutheran Village, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, MD 21158 ; the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, New York, NY 10004; or to the Autism Society, 4340 East West Highway, Suite 350, Bethesda, MD 20814.
