On December 29th, 2016, John Walter Smith, age 74, passed away peacefully at his home in Sykesville surrounded by his family. He was born January 11, 1942 in Frostburg, Maryland, he was the only son of the late Walter William Smith and Pauline Laverne (Mankamyer) Smith. He grew up in Baltimore, Md and graduated from Kenwood High School in 1959. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Dorothy Kahl Smith and their two children, Wayne Smith of Vero Beach, Florida and Heather Mearkle and husband Dan Mearkle of Rosedale, Maryland. Three grandchildren, Ashelynn Brooks of Rosedale, Brandon Smith of Westminster, and Taylor Young of Rosedale. John also has many brothers-in-law and sisters-in law; many nieces and nephews. John served in the US Air Force from 1959-1963 in both Texas and Greenland. He and Dorothy were married in 1965 and had two children. His career was in sales/quality control management involving general products, pools, hot tubs, and eventually cars at Barnes Chevrolet from which he retired from in 2003. He enjoyed working part time after retirement at the Gun Shack in Mt. Airy for a few years. John was a founding member of the "Dirt Cheap Band" aka "Laurel Canyon Band" from 1979~1993 where he acquired once in a life time friendships with many great folks. They spent almost 15 years performing at many local events, parties, and lounges. He enjoyed bass fishing on the rivers and local lakes throughout the year. He and his family vacationed in Canada every year for well over 50 years fishing on West Lake in Ontario. He was also an avid hunter of white tail deer and various other game. He was able to fulfill a life time dream of hunting in Africa 2006. One of his favorite places was the hunting cabin in Benezette, Pa which he and his wife have owned since 1991. Other hobbies and interests included watching Jeopardy, football, baseball, MMA, and playing cards, target shooting, four wheeling and "debating" with any family member or friend who felt up for the challenge. You know who you are! Occasionally this would cost someone a seafood dinner!
