Joseph Allen Fowler, 85, of Westminster, died Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Golden Living Center after a brief illness.

Born July 4, 1927, in Baltimore, he was son of the late Harvey B. and Ruth Raynor Fowler. He was the husband of the late Joan Williamson Fowler, his wife of 63 years.

He was a 1946 graduate of City College High School, in Baltimore. He graduated from Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College, with a degree in chemistry. He served in the Coast Guard from 1946 until 1948.

After graduation from college, he began a career with Congoleum that would last 42 years, starting out as lead chemist. He briefly left Congoleum and worked for Virginia Pulp and Paper and then returned to Congoleum in 1965 as a plant manager at the Cedarhurst location, in Finksburg, and at the Marcus Hook, Pa., location. During his career, he was instrumental in the removal of asbestos from vinyl flooring products.

He and his wife enjoyed working in their gardens. He enjoyed trains and music. He also enjoyed and was active in his daughter Victoria Fowler's music career. He was proud of his four grandchildren's accomplishments.

Surviving are daughters Victoria E. Fowler and Jennifer F. Buck, both of Westminster; grandchildren Theodore A. Buck III and fiance Stephanie Becker, of Salisbury, Christopher Joseph, Emily Joan and Nicholas David Buck, all of Westminster; brother and sister-in-law John E. and Carolyn H. Kinnamon, of Cordova; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by sister Dorothy Fowler Feustle, who died in 2012.

The family will receive friends at noon Saturday at the Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

A service will follow at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Deacon Craig Giles officiating. Inurnment will be in Westminster Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Boy Scout Troop 2007, c/o St. Benjamin's Lutheran Church, 700 Kriders Cemetery Road, Westminster, MD 21158; or Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave. Westminster, MD 21157.
