Joseph Charles Villa, 89, of Baltimore, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, in Baltimore.

Born March 26, 1923, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Pietro and Marianna Villa. He was the husband of Bertha Eleanor Villa, who died in 2003.

He was retired from the merchant marines and he served in the Army during World War II. He worked at Harbor Hospital as the chief engineer and upon retirement continued to volunteer in the hospital gift shop. He also volunteered on the Liberty Ship John W. Brown for 20 years supporting the restoration and operation of the engine room and other systems.

Surviving are daughter Toni Louise Picker and husband Roger, of Sykesville; a brother, Charles Villa, of Swiftwater, Pa.; grandchildren Jonathan J. Picker and fiance Lisa Back, Roger K. Picker and wife Toni, and Danielle Prietz and husband Scott; great-grandchildren Zoe, Bryson, Ty and Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers; and three sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.
