Joseph Francis Hughes, 93, of Westminster, died Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Brightview Westminster Ridge.

Born Sept. 16, 1920, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late James and Ellen Doherty Hughes. He was the husband of the late Lillian M. Hamrick Hughes, who passed away in 1995.

He was a 1938 graduate of City High School and received a degree in accounting from the University of Baltimore. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII.

He was the comptroller for the Hawkins Co. and later retired from PHH Corporation, where he was vice president of procurement.

He enjoyed golfing, especially with his sons. He was a fan of the Baltimore Colts and Orioles. He was also an avid reader of WWII history.

Surviving are children and spouses P. Michael Hughes, Kathleen M. and William Heilman, J. Barry and Teresa Hughes, all of Westminster, Lillian M. and George Knipp, of Catonsville, T. Kevin and Barbara Hughes, of Sykesville, Brian L. and Linda Hughes, of Cary, North Carolina, and Maureen A. and Mark Shields, of Newark, Delaware; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Stephen J. Hughes; and siblings Catherine Finch, Helen Haviland and James, Thomas, John, Timothy and Mary Hughes.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at  Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, where a Christian wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Catholic Church, 43 Monroe St., Westminster, with the Rev. John Lesnick as celebrant. Interment will be in Meadowridge Memorial Park, Elkridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in his memory to The Arc Carroll County, 180 Kriders Church Road, Westminster, MD 21158; or to CHANGE Inc., 115 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
