Joseph Raymond Bertling, 88, of Hampstead, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at Longview Nursing Home in Manchester.

Born Aug. 15, 1925, in Laurel, he was the son of the late John and Mary Garner Bertling. He was the husband of Lucille Brooks Bertling, his wife of 56 years.

He was a Navy veteran, having served in World War II and the Korean War. He had been a mechanic for United Airlines and the DC Metro prior to retirement. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters Denise Fierro, of Westminster, Karen Bertling, of Adamstown, and Janet Ragland, of Woodlawn; sons Dennis Bertling, of Arbutus, and Brian Bertling, of Eldersburg; two sisters; and six grandchildren.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service, 3 p.m. Wednesday at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main St., Hampstead, with the Rev. Art Monroe officiating. Interment will be at a later date.
