Kyoko Ellen Weant, age 86, of Taneytown, passed away Friday, January 1, 2016 at Dove House in Westminster, Md. Born February 4, 1929 in Oita City, Japan, she was the daughter of the late Mutsuo Ikeda and Shizue Katsuragi Ikeda. She was the wife of 62 years to the late Howard Weant, who passed away in 2012. Howard and Ellen met as he was serving in the Army during the Korean War. She attended Beppu Kenrishtu Girls' High School and studied at Beppu Women's College (Beppu University), majoring in Economics. Ellen loved traveling, reading, classical music concerts, museum visits, line dancing, staying active at the Taneytown Senior Center and her church, sharing jigsaw puzzles,teaching Origami and Japanese culture classes at local schools and clubs, and taking videos of hundreds of events for her family and community. She was immensely optimistic, energetic and outgoing, loved making new friends, and was always willing to help whether you wanted it or not. She instilled a sense of being loved and needed, and never lost that childlike wonder. Ellen is survived by son Terry Weant;daughter-in-law Tammy Weant, daughters Linda Passell and husband John, Gale Smith and ;Michiko Szpatura and husband;Gary; grandchildren Carrie Weant, Tyler Weant and wife Melissa, Brendan Passell, Troy Smith and wife Ellen, and Ian Smith; two great-grandchildren, Caden and Jaxon Zepf. In Japan Ellen is survived by a brother Hiko Ikeda; sisters Kuniko Himendo, Fusa Endo, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by brother-in-law Earl Weant, sisters-in-law Oneida Hogan, Joyce Weant and Alberta Weant and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brother; Mutsuya Ikeda, brothers-in-law Norio Endo, Richard Weant, Sirrell Weant, and nephew Junya Ikeda. Ellen was a long-time, active member of Messiah United Methodist Church. She has donated her body to the Maryland Anatomy Board for scientific research. A Celebration of Ellen's life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016 at the Taneytown Vol. Fire Company Activities Building, Memorial Drive from 12 - 4 PM. The service will be at 1:30 with Pastor Brenda Shields and Pastor Art Thomas. In her memory donations may be made to Messiah United Methodist Church, 25 Middle Street, Taneytown MD or the Taneytown Senior Center, 220 Roberts Mill Road, Taneytown, MD 21787.
