Lacy Elizabeth Waltz Smalley, 89, of Gettysburg, Pa., died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at York General Hospital in York, Pa.

Born July 9, 1924, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Margaret Runkles Waltz. She was the wife of George Richard Smalley, who died in 2000.

She spent most of her life in Baltimore, and in younger years, she enjoyed shopping trips to downtown Baltimore and New York. She was a member of the Young at Heart Club in Brooklyn in the 1980s and 1990s, and was a life member of the Eastern Star.

After a stroke in 2002, she was less mobile, but still enjoyed outings to shops and restaurants. A few of her favorite things included reading, "Lawrence Welk" and "I Love Lucy" reruns, bingo and the family bulldog, Cleo. She was known for her laughter and smile during activities at the Gettysburg Lutheran Retirement Village.

Surviving are children Leslie Bowyer and husband Bill Tracy, of Roland Park, and Alice Blankenship and husband Edward, of Westminster; grandchildren Stuart Bowyer, Lauren Bowyer, Jason Blankenship and wife Danielle, Adam Blankenship and wife Linda, and Dustin Blankenship; a brother-in-law, George Layman; nephews Robert Arnold, and George Layman III and wife Rebecca; grandnieces Hannah and Sarah, a grandnephew, Andrew; and her husband's family, brothers-in-law Paul Smalley and wife Elaine, Forest Smalley and wife Naomi, and Kenneth Smalley, and sister-in-law Gwen Brownlee.

She was predeceased by a son, George Richard Smalley Jr.; a great-grandson, Noah Blankenship; a son-in-law, Tom Bowyer; sisters Catherine Waltz, Louise Layman, and Evelyn and husband Henry Arnold; and her husband's family members, sisters-in-law Edith and husband Mark Ryan, Alberta and husband John R, Ann, Mildred; and brothers-in-law Henry Smalley and Bill Brownlee.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at  Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Emerge Inc., 9180 Rumsey Road, Columbia, MD 21045, in honor of her grandson, Stuart, who has autism; or to the Humane Society of Carroll County, 2517 Littlestown Pike, Westminster, MD 21158.
