LaVerna Ray Miller White, 90, of Greenville, South Carolina and formerly of Mt. Airy, Maryland, died July 20, 2016, at home surrounded by family. She was born August 13, 1925 in Schenectady, NY, daughter of the late Anna May Ray and Arthur G. L. Miller. She is survived by daughters: Karen (Jim) Kane of Taneytown, MD, Barbara (Michael) McInerney of Greenville, SC, Diane (Scott) Hinkle of Davis, WV, Lisa (Mike) Fair of Biglerville, PA, and son Richard (Peggy) White, Jr. of Mt. Airy, MD. Also surviving are sisters Lorraine Fry of Chestertown, MD and Charlene Lang of Mt. Airy, MD and brother Arthur (Karen) Miller, Jr. of Allenstown, NH. She was the beloved grandmother of Marc Muller, Erica (Michael) Kraemer, Richard (Kandi) White, III, Meghan (Jeff) Doyle, Patrick McInerney, Ben (Lauren) Hinkle, Daniel (Lindsey) Crown, Jr., Briana (Park) Webster, Katie McInerney, Katerina (Derek) Ford, and Anastasia Kane and great-grandmother to Tommy, Dakota, Timmy and Danny White, Kailyn and Westin Kraemer, Miles and Emerson Doyle, Parker and Grace Webster, and Emmelin and Adlee Hinkle. Mrs. White graduated from the University of Rochester, New York. She worked as a histologist for cancer research at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD, until her marriage in 1948 to Richard T. White who preceded her in death in 2006. In the early years of their marriage, she helped with their farming operation and in 1980 she earned her Master's Degree in counseling. She worked for the Frederick and Carroll County Health Departments as an addictions counselor until her retirement. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Mt. Airy, MD where she was very active in the Stephen's Ministry and served for many years as a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed volunteering at the New Windsor SERRV Center and teaching English as a second language. She travelled the world and enjoyed camping, reading, sewing, quilting, and watching Fox News. The Serenity Prayer has been her lifelong guide and she was a firm believer that life boils down to faith, family, and friends. Friends will be received at Calvary United Methodist Church, Mt. Airy, MD on Monday, July 25 from 12 -2 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 2pm with a reception afterwards in Good Shepherd Hall. A private burial will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery at a later date.
