Leland J. Compton Sr., 79, of Mount Airy, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born Feb. 17, 1933, in Augusta, W.Va., he was the son of Arvella J. Ruckman Haines and the late Loring Jackson Compton; and foster parents the late Melvin and Otie Smith.

He was the husband of Hazel M. Compton, his wife of 58 years.

He was an electrical engineer for Westinghouse Company and retired as sales manager of Pro Force Company. He was a member of the Naval Air Force Reserves for eight years.

He enjoyed woodworking and golfing, and having parties. He enjoyed being with people and his family. He was an active member of the Carroll County Senior Center and past president of the Carroll County Billiards League.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are children Toni M. Archer and husband Jim, Leland J. Compton Jr. and former wife Debra Wagner, and Robin P. Schneider and husband Jim; a sister, Carolyn J. Sibert; grandchildren Chelsea Davenport and husband Brian, Wills Archer IV, Leland J. Compton III and wife Dawn, Christopher J. Compton, Sarah E. Schneider and Joshua Schneider; and a great-grandchild, Lavinia June Compton.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield, with the Rev. Art Monroe officiating. Inurnment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Humane Society of Carroll County Inc., 2517 Littlestown Pike, Westminster, MD 21158; or to a favorite .
