Passed December 1, 2015 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. He was 95. Leon was born in Afton, NY on November 2, 1920 to Marion and Reeta Swart. He entered Ithica College in 1938. When the war started in 1941, Leon entered the Army and fought with the 19th Corps from Normandy to the Elbe. After the war he finished college in 1948 with his masters in education. He taught and coached in Maryland from 1948 until 1964 when he and his family moved to Tucson for health reasons. In Maryland, Leon's main love was coaching. He coached Cross Country with a Maryland state championship in 1961, Track and Basketball which was the sport he loved the most. In 1959 he was named Montgomery County Maryland basketball coach of the year. In Tucson, Leon was a counselor at Palo Verde from 1965 until 1972. In 1972 he became an administrator at Sabino High School which was his last position, retiring in 1982. Leon enjoyed retirement especially watching UA basketball, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth; his son, Robert and his two grandchildren, Sean and Kimberly. Arrangements by EVERGREEN MORTUARY.
