Lester E. Werkheiser Sr., 87, of Sykesville, died Monday, Sep. 10, 2012, at Northwest Hospital Center in Randallstown.

Born Sept. 22, 1924, in Easton, Pa., he was the son of the late Osbourn Henry and Edith Mae Kelchnor Werkheiser. He was predeceased by his first wife, Reeva Sklar Werkheiser, who died in 1987. He was the husband of Betty Lord Mayne Werkheiser.

He had retired as an insurance auditor from Baltimore Life. He had served in the Navy during World War II. He was an accomplished artist, an original founder and member of the WDS stock club and a charter member of Freedom Christian Church in Sykesville. He enjoyed walking his dog, gardening, the outdoors and was an airplane buff. He also held a U.S. patent for a woodworking tool invention.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter and son-in-law Edie Mary and John K. Harrop, of Fairfax, Va.; son and daughter-in-law Lester E. Jr. and Deborah Werkheiser, of Owings Mills; a stepdaughter-in-law, Deborah Mayne, of Halethorpe; a brother, Sterling "Butch" Werkheiser, of Texas; sisters Betty D'Angelo, Florence Weller and Joyce Helm, all of Easton, Pa., and Joanne Shriner, of Georgia; grandchildren Jennifer M. Lupinetti, John A., Matthew A., Catherine A. and Sarah E. Harrop, Dulcie A. Horenci and William F. Mayne; and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a stepson, James F. "Fred" Mayne, who died in 2006; six brothers; and two sisters.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 18, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery in Owings Mills.
