Lester Herbert Deardorff, 87, of York, Pa., formerly of Westminster, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, at Normandie Ridge Senior Living Community in York.

Born in Westminster, he was the son of the late Lester E. and Ethel Bitzel Deardorff. He was the husband of Jean Marie Long Deardorff, his wife of 62 years, who died in September 2009.

He was a 1943 graduate of New Windsor High School. He joined the Navy and served during World War II on board the USS Janssen DE 396, which was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon and a Presidential Unit Citation for its anti-submarine service protecting convoys in the North Atlantic. He worked at Quality Cleaners in Westminster as a plant manager and went on to work for the State of Maryland at Springfield State Hospital until he retired.

He was a member of Shiloh American Legion Post 791 in York, and a former member of Post 31 of Westminster. He was also a past member of St. John's Church of Westminster. He enjoyed watching all sports and served as an assistant Little League coach in Westminster during the 1960s. He loved Maryland crabs and oysters.

Surviving are sons and daughter-in-law Michael A. Deardorff, of Westminster, and Timothy D. and Joy K. Deardorff, of Temecula, Calif.; granddaughters Kandacei Deardorff Jones and Sydney J. Deardorff; a great-grandchild, Madison Jones; a sister, Alice Lockard; a sister-in-law, Aileen Long.; nieces Lisa Deyerberg, Janetta Jayman, Susan Lockard Posey, Dorinda Deardorff Derreth and Delaine Deardorff Beck; and nephews Jeffrey Lockard and David Lockard.

He was predeceased by a sister, Jean A. Deardorff; a brother, Franklin E. Deardorff; and a grandson, Ryan M. Deardorff.

A funeral service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Krider's Cemetery on Krider's Church Road near Westminster.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Normandie Ridge Benevolent Fund, Albright Care Services, 90 Maplewood Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
