Lewis Harold Humke, 87, peacefully passed away at home, in Adamstown, MD, on December 21, 2014. He had suffered for 3 years from a massive stroke and cancer. Lewis served his country for 23 years, first in the Navy, in the Pacific Theater during WW II, and then the Army. He was a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne and later was among the first helicopter pilots in the Army to fly rescue missions in Germany in the early 1950's. He also served in Viet Nam. Lewis was a rural route carrier for the US Postal Service in Taneytown, MD for 20 years. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He is survived by his loving wife, Caroline Smith of 63 years. They were married at Fort Benning, GA in 1951. Lewis is also survived by a daughter, Carol (Humke) Moore, son-in-law, Steve Moore of North Carolina and a son. Lewis had 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later time.
