Louise Leister Haifley, 98, a former teacher at North Carroll High School, died May 11, 2016, in Knoxville, TN. She was born in 1918 to Esther and Milford Brilhart Leister on her grandfather Leister's farm in Hampstead, MD, and walked to Houcksville School in the first grade. She graduated from Hampstead High School in 1934; received a B.A. degree from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) in 1939; and earned a Master's degree from Towson University. She married Francis Alfred Haifley in 1939 and got her first teaching job the same year. She taught in Prince George's County for five years and then came home to Carroll County and taught at Manchester and North Carroll High Schools for a total of 38 years. She moved to Florida in 1981 and was a resident there until she moved to Knoxville in 2015. Mrs. Haifley was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, Manchester Homemakers and Senior Citizens, North Carroll Senior Citizens, the Woman's Club of Hampstead, and the Trinity United Church of Christ. In Florida she was a member of Longboat Island Chapel and lived at Freedom Village in Bradenton. She enjoyed traveling and visited all fifty states in the United States, but lived only in Maryland, Hawaii, Florida and Tennessee. For many years she attended auctions and yard sales, opening her own antique shop called "Mandy Junque." She was an avid pinochle player and enjoyed dining out wherever she was. She is predeceased by her husband, Francis A. Haifley, and her sons John F. Haifley and Francis A. "Fred" Haifley, Jr. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Julie Link Haifley, of Washington, DC; foster son James Benson Sheets of York, PA; granddaughters Helen Haifley McCreight and husband Owen of Kensington, MD, and Katherine Haifley DeAnna and husband John-Paul of Knoxville, TN; and a great grandson James Wesley DeAnna of Knoxville, TN. The family will receive friends 10-11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., 3296 Charmil Drive, Manchester with a funeral service to follow at Noon at the Trinity United Church of Christ, 3229 York Street, Manchester with the Rev. Suzanne A. Schmidt officiating. Interment will be in Hampstead Cemetery. Online condolences may be offered at www.eckhardtfuneralchapel.com.
