Lucia McAlister Lech, 55, of Sykesville, MD, passed away peacefully at home on April 3, 2018, after a long and difficult battle with leukemia. Born August 1, 1962, in Tulsa, OK, she was the daughter of Charles Donald McAlister and Nancy Bearce, both of whom predeceased her. In addition to her loving husband of 30 years, Daniel C. Lech, Lucia is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Charles Day of Aldie, VA; her brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Cynthia McAlister of Houston, TX; Daniel's sister and brother-in-law, Nanciann and Jonathan Cherry of Toledo, OH; maternal aunt, Barbara Tuneski, of Niantic, CT; 6 nieces and nephews; 4 great nieces and nephews; numerous cousins, friends and her beloved dog, KC. At the time of her passing, Lucia was a System Specialist for Verizon, where she had worked for almost 30 years, beginning with the company when it was C&P Telephone. The four great passions of Lucia's life were spending time with her family and friends, collecting and selling Longaberger baskets, visiting Walt Disney World (her favorite character was Goofy) and the fact that she was a Former Student of the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University, Class of 1984. Many of Lucia's favorite baskets are accented in maroon, one of the school colors of the Aggies, and she was quite put out that the color for the leukemia cancer ribbon was so close to the burnt orange of the Aggies' archrival - a color she did not allow in her home nor would she ever wear the ribbon. A celebration of Lucia's life with luncheon will be held at 1 p.m. April 21 at Bon Secours Retreat and Conference Center in Marriottsville, MD. Helping other students to attend Texas A&M was very dear to Lucia, so the family has established a memorial scholarship to the school in Lucia's name. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the scholarship at The family would like to express its gratitude to the many people who called or sent cards, texts, and notes to Lucia to help brighten her days during her illness.
