Mabel Catherine Driver Flora, 87, of Bridgewater, Virginia, passed away Monday, December 1, 2014. She was born in Augusta County, VA on April 29, 1927. She graduated from New Hope High School in 1944, attended Bridgewater College and graduated from Towson University. Coursework at Western Maryland College gave her a Masters Equivalency. Mabel and her family lived in Carroll County, Maryland for 45 years before moving to Bridgewater, VA in 1997. She was a second grade school teacher and reading specialist at Mount Airy Elementary School for 22 years. During this time she was also dietitian for Camp Woodbrook, a Church of the Brethren camp and retreat center directed by her husband, David. She was a member of the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren and Brethren Churches in North Carolina and Maryland. Her work in the church included board chair, commissions, women's work, deacon, teaching classes and singing in the choir for many years. On September 17, 1948 Mabel married David Eller Flora, who survives. Also surviving are four sons; David, Jr. and wife Janet of Westminster, MD; Dale, of Frederick, MD; Daniel and wife Pamela of Fairfax, VA; and Stephen of Kodiak, AK. Additional survivors include seven grandchildren: Jeffrey Carter and wife Kim; Krista Kist and husband, Ed; Chad, Lauren, Ethan, Molly and Kayley Flora; as well as five great grandchildren: Anna, Grace, and Julie Carter, Conner and Jacob Kist. She is survived by two brothers: Allen Driver of Escondido, California and Charles Driver of Staunton, Virginia. A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren. The family will receive friends at the Church following the service.
