Marvin Edward "Pete" Gartrell, 81, of Mount Airy, died Monday, July 23, 2012, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born Jan. 11, 1931, in Woodbine, he was the son of the late Tolley Edward Gartrell and Amanda Duvall Gartrell. He was the husband of Erma Jane Porter Gartrell, his wife of 60 years.

He had served in the Air Force for four years, and had traveled to Guam and Hawaii, and had been stationed in Texas and Washington State. He was a retired sign foreman for the State Highway Administration.

He was a lifelong member of Morgan Chapel United Methodist Church in Woodbine. He enjoyed raising beagles, hunting, gardening and mowing the grass. He liked the Baltimore Orioles and was a Baltimore Ravens fan.

Surviving are children Kim Gartrell Endres, and Tony M. Gartrell and wife Judy Gartrell, all of Mount Airy, and Tammy A. Duvall, of Woodbine; a sister, Martha Gosnell and husband Russell, of Woodbine; grandchildren Jennifer and Jacob Duvall, Jason Endres, and Justin and Joshua Gartrell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Harry "Junior" Duvall.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home and Crematory, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Art Monroe officiating. Interment will be in Morgan Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Woodbine.
