Mary E. Mormann

The Guest Book is expired.

Mary Ellen Towler Mormann, 88, of Baltimore, formerly of Westminster, died Sunday, June 9, 2013, in Baltimore.

Born near Chatham, Va., in Java, she was one of the youngest of a large farm family that included 10 brothers and sisters. She was the wife of the late Fletcher Mormann, her husband of 56 years.

The Towler family moved to Chatham in about 1929. She left Chatham, grade school-age, as a nanny for her school teacher. As a young teenage girl, she moved with the family to the teacher's in-laws' home, still babysitting. She stayed in Baltimore after the family moved.

She volunteered at Fort Howard to help the Red Cross. She rode trolleys and buses from Arlington and began to work at the May Company downtown during the war.

She and her husband had many Chesapeake experiences, including crossing at Solomons Island a long time ago and meeting astronaut Alan Shepard. She received her GED at the age of 55. She was a devout United Methodist participant and had attended Arlington Methodist Church. She had been a government administrative assistant, and, in later years, she was known to be a storyteller. For many decades, she enjoyed handiwork including sewing, basket weaving, gold leafing, caning and rushing seats in chairs, quilting, crocheting, canning and helping community with church suppers. She also enjoyed driving, especially the Skyline Drive.

Late in life, she fought against several painful, chronic diseases. She participated monthly in an eye study, at ages 85 through 87, at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Surviving are a son, Stephen Mormann; a daughter-in-law, Leila Mahlin; a daughter, Lynne M.P. Rittenberg; grandsons Nathaniel and Benjamin Mormann; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews across the United States.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service, 11 a.m. Friday at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster. Interment will follow in Westminster Cemetery.
