Mary Steger

The Guest Book is expired.

Mary L. Steger passed on to heaven August 18, 2014 at the age of 97, at the Brethren Home along with VNA Hospice both cared for her with immense compassion. She was born January 14, 1917, on a farm near the Black Rock Church of the Brethren where she went to church. As she was growing up one day she met a young man selling and installing electric fences to farmers to keep the cows fenced in, Mary's father purchased this fencing and along with it his new son-in law Oliver C. Steger, for 75 years. Mary always wanted to be a nurse but eventually starting teaching elementary school first in a one room school house. She graduated from Elizabethtown College in 1951, a predominately Brethren institution. She went on to teach at Pennsville School, and finally at Baresville School in Hanover for a total of 36 years. Mary's mother became ill and after her retirement she spent many years caring for her mother. Finally she became free to do those things she wanted to do which were reading, traveling, and camping. There are great pictures of Mary on a camel with the background of the pyramids in Egypt, visiting the Eiffel tower in France, and many other countries of Europe. More than anything she just like visiting the state parks and camping in the USA, that was something very much fun to her. She had two sons Gregory B. Steger, his wife Linda S. (Graf ) Steger of Hanover, PA., and James O. Steger, his wife Carol A. (Easley) Steger of Greensboro, NC. A graveside service will be held at the Black Rock Church of the Brethren where she finally came home again to at the convenience of the family by ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A. of Manchester.
