Mayfield Elizabeth Benge, 88, of Westminster, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born Oct. 17, 1924, in Snydersburg, she was the daughter of the late Walter E. and Blanche P. Miller Smith. She was the wife of the late Verlin D. Benge, who died Nov. 30, 1960.

She retired in October 2011 after 31 years of service, as a billing clerk at Sinai Hospital. She was a life member of St. Mark's United Church of Christ Snydersburg, where she had been sexton many years. She enjoyed church plays and being a liturgist. She was a life member of Snydersburg Homemakers, where she was the oldest member. She was also a member of the Snydersburg Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She enjoyed reading, listening to music and audiotapes of the Bible and talking to people; and liked to give to others.

She was the last of her immediate family.

Surviving are daughters Brenda A. Brown and husband Jim, and Paulette E. Smith, all of Westminster, and Sharon E. Weeks and husband Wayne, of Taneytown; son Benjamin O. Benge and fiancee Vonnie Ditzel, of Hampstead; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Verlie A. Benge, in 1999.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main St., Hampstead.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's United Church of Christ Snydersburg, with the Rev. Melvina Stricklin officiating. Interment will be in St. Mark's (Snydersburg) Cemetery.
