Mayo "Mel" Lafiner

Mayo "Mel" Lafiner, 86, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at Villa Maria nursing home in Fargo, N.D., after a lengthy battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Born March 24, 1927, in Pembina, N.D., he was the son of the late Edward and Violet Butler Lafiner. He was the husband of the late Naomi Jeannine Sleeger Lafiner; and of Merilyn Crocker Scharnowske Lafiner.

He served in the Army and drove a semi over the road until he retired in 1993. He spent 15 of his early years on the rodeo circuit. He later moved to Maryland where he married first wife. After her death, he returned to North Dakota, where he met and married his current wife Dec. 6, 1997, in Medora, N.D., at the Cowboy Christmas celebration.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a brother, Billie Lafiner; son Mayo "Jim" Lafiner Jr. and wife Mary, of Sykesville; daughter Jeannine "Nina" and husband Fred Burkhard, of Sykesville; stepchildren Lynn Goyne and friend Russ Medler, of Bismarck, N.D., Mike Scharnowske and wife Kathy, of Wing, N.D., Mark Scharnowske and wife Candy Ehli, of Wilton, N.D., and Diane Friesz and husband Arnold Jr., of Elgin, N.D.; 12 step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; and nephew and friend, Neal Widme and wife Sharon.

He was predeceased by siblings Doris, Effie, George and Lettie Lafiner.

A service was held Monday at Sunne Lutheran Church in Wilton, N.D., with the Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery near Mandan, N.D.
