Nicholas Jay "Nick" Smith, age 33, of Sykesville, passed away on Saturday, December 5, 2015, at his home. Born January 3, 1982, in Oklahoma, he was the son of Kelly Lee Smith and the late Kathy Tinch. Nick had a passion for cooking. He had been working as the chef for G.L. Shacks in Eldersburg. He had won the Sykesville Chili cook off several times. In addition to cooking, he was a sports fanatic and was a big fan of Cal Ripken and Ray Lewis. He is survived by his sister, Sarah Helwig and brother, Kyle Smith and wife, Kira Kisner; companion, Bethany Lane and daughter, Skyla and grandson of Bobbie Ward and Harry Smith. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 to 7pm at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will be held at 7pm. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nathan Chris Baker Foundation, PO Box 994, Sykesville, MD 21784.
