Otis Eugene "Smitty" Smith, 89, of Union Bridge, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Lorien of Taneytown, after a brief illness.

Born Aug. 11, 1923, in Johnsville, he was the son of the late Joseph D. Smith and Margaret E. Albaugh Hilterbrick. He was the husband of Virginia L. Stambaugh Smith, who died in 1999.

He had served in the Army Air Force during World War II with the 8th Air Force and the 982nd Military Police in England, receiving the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.He was a self-employed electrician.

He was a life member of V.F.W. Post 8806 of Union Bridge. He enjoyed attending the "coffee club" at the Union Bridge Pharmacy, birdwatching, visiting friends, watching old Western movies, spending time with his pets and helping others as an all-around handyman.

Surviving are daughters Joann Thompson and husband Reis, of Union Bridge, Marion Clayville and husband Jeff, of Silver Run, and Georgia Martin, of New Windsor; grandchildren Ricky C. Staley and wife Cecilia, of Orlando, Fla., Joe Motter and wife Pam, of Holly Ridge, N.C., Mellissa Brown and husband Jeff, of New Windsor, Donna Myers and husband Ben, of Union Bridge, and Mike Motter, of Silver Run; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Susan E. Staley; a sister, Edna Parrish; and brothers Norman D. and Raymond Smith.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard L. Michael, pastor of St. James Lutheran Church in Union Bridge, officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Uniontown.
