Paul Raymond Shaffer, 85, of Eldersburg, died Saturday, July 20, 2013.

Born in 1927, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Elsie A. and Dora Shaffer. He was the husband of Mary Julia Coniff Shaffer, his wife of 63 years, who died in 2010.

He was a graduate of La Salle Academy in Cumberland, where he twice won the Outstanding Player Award at the Eastern Catholic Invitational Basketball Tournament in Newport, R.I. He graduated from the University of Maryland. He was a veteran of the Army.

He had a career as a federal government employee with the Social Security Administration. After retirement, he spent many years enjoying his grandchildren and sported a competitive golf game.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law Clark Shaffer and Stacy Shaffer, of Westminster, Scott Shaffer and Jacqueline Shaffer, and Craig Shaffer and Bettijane Shaffer, all of Sykesville; daughter and son-in-law Julie Voight and Robert Voight, of Sykesville; grandchildren Brock, Jesse, Luke, Kelly and Kathleen Shaffer, Brianna Kirkbride, Christina McCullough, Lindsay Goldstein and Meagan Wehn; and great-grandchilden Emmeline Goldstein, Hunter Goldstein, Grace Wehn, and Jack and Ryan Kirkbride.

He was predeceased by brothers Edward, Robert and Francis "Penny" Shaffer; and a sister, Anna Marie Huff.

He donated his body to the Anatomy Board.

The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date.
