Phyllis L. Dowler, 88, of Hagerstown, formerly of Charleston, W.Va., died Monday, April 1, 2013, at Emeritus Senior Living Center.

Born Dec. 28, 1924, in Sulphur Springs, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Bertha Campbell Bittikofer. She was the wife of the late Blaine P. Dowler.

She was a graduate of Center College Business School, and retired in 1982 from the West Virginia Department of Education in Charleston. She was a member of the Bona Vista Garden Club in Charleston.

Always active in church through the years, she taught Sunday School, sang in the church choirs and was a member of women's circle groups. She was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Williamsport.

In addition to her work, her focus was her family and her home. She liked to work in the garden, cook, play the piano and sing. She especially enjoyed sewing clothing and she made many of her own and her daughter's clothes, including daughter Marsha's wedding gown, and Susie's and April's bridesmaid dresses.

In later years, she and her husband traveled throughout the United States and Canada.

Surviving are daughters Marsha Dowler Vogel and husband John, of Westminster, Susan Dowler Wengenroth, of Brunswick, and April L. Dowler and husband John League, of Williamsport; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Bittikofer.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 10813 Donelson Drive, Williamsport, with the Rev. Mark A. Sandell officiating.
