Dr. Richard C. Strand, Ph.D., age 84, died Thursday, October 19 at his home in Chicago, IL after a long illness. He was raised in Osnabrock, ND by his late parents, Carl W. Strand and Alice A. (Dubourt) Strand. He was a graduate of North Dakota Agricultural College (now NDSU) who studied in France for a year on a Fulbright Scholarship before attending Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. There he earned his Ph.D. in high-energy nuclear physics and met his wife, the former Phyllis Clabaugh, whom he married in 1961. After receiving his Ph.D. he taught physics at Hopkins for a year before accepting a research position at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, L.I., NY. He spent 45 years, his entire career, at BNL. An advocate for education, he served on the board of education for the BNL Preschool and was a member of the Shoreham Wading River School Board for 25 years. After retiring he and his wife sold the home they built in the Village of Shoreham, moved to Jacksonville, FL, and eventually settled in Chicago, IL. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of 56 years; 2 children, Andrew and his wife Mandy Petersen of Chicago, IL and Mandy Gildersleeve and her husband Tom of Dallas, TX; 4 grandchildren, Alister and Adalina of Chicago and Timothy and Katelin of Dallas. He is also survived by his younger siblings David and his wife Cordy (Machart) of Aitkin, MN and Dorothy (Strand) Johnson and her husband Bruce of Edmore, ND and his brother-in-law C. Richard Clabaugh and his wife Joanne (Volland) of Westminster, MD. Richard will be fondly remembered by them and many nieces, nephews, relatives, colleagues, neighbors, and friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 24, at 11 A.M. at Dovre Lutheran Church, 108 Broadway, Osnabrock, ND 58269, with Rev. Don Reynolds presiding. As they wished inurnment will follow in the family plot at Union Cemetery. A Celebration of Richard's life will be held in the summer of 2018 in the Village of Shoreham, L.I., NY. In lieu of flowers, plant an evergreen tree in his memory in a place you love.
