Richard Michael Smith, 67, of near Marston, died suddenly Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, at Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster.

Born Sept. 4, 1945, in New Windsor, he was the son of the late Robert Edward Smith Sr. and Rose M. Strine Smith.

Smith was a 1964 graduate of Francis Scott Key High School. He was formerly employed as a mechanic with Richland Brothers of Westminster, then with Congoleum and retired from the State Highway Department after 20 plus years as a maintenance engineer.

He enjoyed WWE wrestling, vegetable gardening, fishing, working in his yard and watching old Western movies.

Surviving are sons James Smith, of Charlotte, of N.C.; and Gene Smith, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brother R. Edward Smith Jr., of Westminster; longtime companion Joyce Meckley; niece Lisa Davis, of Taneytown and nephew, Troy Smith, of Mount Airy.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Paul N. Leatherman Jr., of Sams Creek Church of the Brethren, officiating. Interment will be in Sams Creek Cemetery.
