Richard "Whitey" Whitecavage, 55, of Sykesville, died unexpectedly on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born in Biloxi, Miss., he was the son of Bob and Marion Whitecavage, of Forest City, Pa.

He grew up in Clinton, N.Y. and later moved to Sykesville.

He spent many years in the automotive industry. Most recently, he worked at Manheim as an automotive inspector.

Along with his automotive and mechanical skills, he enjoyed art, specializing in lettering, airbrushing, performing automotive customization and restoring various automobiles, especially VW bugs. This work received awards and recognition for excellence and dedication to this work.

He enjoyed many types of car racing. He was a snowmobiler and drag racer, a passion he shared with his wife. He also enjoyed fishing, sportsmanship, ice hockey, listening to music and reading.

He also enjoyed playing the electric guitar and built several of his own. He would play the likings of many blues guitarists.

Surviving are wife of 35 years, Jackie; daughter Melanie Whitecavage, of Lancaster Pa.; sister Kristen Herbert, of Balwinsville, N.Y.; and two grandsons, a niece and five nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at Haight Funeral Home, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD 21784.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel. He will be buried in the Saint Agnes Cemetery in Forest City, Pa.
