Rita Marie Corbett Furst, 94, of Ellicott City, died Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Lighthouse Senior Living in Ellicott City.

Born March 1, 1919, in East Orange, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah Joseph King Corbett and the late Anna Rita van Lill Corbett. She was the wife of the late Victor J. Furst Jr.

She had been a homemaker for most of her life. She had volunteered at Rosewood Hospital Center and as a counselor at Contact Baltimore. She and her sister-in-law, Anne Furst McCloskey, formed the Maryland Coalition Against Crime, which was instrumental in advocating for victims' rights.

She spent a lot of time lobbying in Annapolis for victims' rights and for tougher sentencing for violent crimes. She received various awards for her efforts, including Marylander of The Year, the Henry Gleim Award and Senior Citizen of the Year. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed reading biographies.

She had been a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church in Catonsville, and at Our Lady of The Angels Catholic Church in Catonsville.

Surviving are a son, Victor J. Furst III, of Eldersburg; a daughter, Susan Furst Gubernatis, of Ellicott City; grandchildren Thomas F. Gubernatis Jr., Marie Elizabeth Rogers and Elaine Katherine Kempler; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son-in-law, Thomas F. Gubernatis Sr.; siblings Van Corbett, Joseph King Corbett and Ann Corbett Lyburn; and a great-granddaughter, Katie Marie Gubernatis.

She was predeceased by a son, Michael P. Furst.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville.

A funeral liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Community, 915 Liberty Road, Eldersburg. Interment will be in New Cathedral Cemetery in Baltimore.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Arc of Carroll County, 180 Kriders Church Road, Westminster, MD 21158.
