Robert Joseph Aune, 68, of Leland, NC, (Compass Point Community), and formerly of Sykesville, MD, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center, Wilmington. He was born in Boston, MA, on August 13, 1947, son of the late Oskar Frederick Aune and Elizabeth Mary Burke Aune. Mr. Aune retired from the Social Security Administration after 37 years of service. He was an active member of the Compass Point Community in Leland, and enjoyed riding motorcycles with his wife, Karen. Mr. Aune was quite the handyman. He designed and built a deck for his home in Sykesville, MD, and collected stone from all over the United States and built a 45 foot wall in his yard using these stones. He was a lecturer and choir member at the Lutheran Church of Reconciliation, and a former confirmation class teacher and vice-president at his church in Maryland. Mr. Aune was a veteran of the United States Army. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Karen Laucht Aune; two daughters, Rebecca Aune of Sykesville, MD and Elizabeth Aune of Dickerson, MD; a sister, Karen Rhode; and a sister-in-law, Carol Ratkoff. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Aune and an infant sister, Phyllis Aune. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm Saturday, August 27, 2016, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel with Pastor William F. Milholland, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Saturday from 5:00 pm until the service hour. Military honors will be presented by an honor detail from the United States Army.
