Robert Donald Hay, 70, of Fairhaven Continuing Care Community in Sykesville, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013.

He was born in Washington, D.C. He was the husband of Sarah Hay, his wife of 45 years.

He attended The Maret School and Lehigh University, where he received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1964. He designed data acquisition systems for Foringer & Company, Control Data Systems, Quad Systems, and other Washington Metro area companies before becoming a partner in his own company, Digital Computer Systems. DCS later merged with Optim Electronics, where he was chief of engineering.

He participated in car rallies, enjoyed camping and hiking, and was usually accompanied outside by one or two of his German Shepherds.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons Thomas Hay, of Frederick, John Hay and wife Connie, of Hanover, Pa., and Stephen Hay and wife Katrina, of Sand Lake, N.Y.; grandchildren Charlotte and Nathan;  sisters Marilyn Fast and husband Pete, of Raleigh, N.C., Judy Speary and husband Bill, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Donna Hay, of Encino, Calif.; and five nephews and nieces.

A memorial reception will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at Fairhaven, 7200 Third Ave., Sykesville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to your local or to your local animal shelter.
