Robert L. Gebhart, 86, of New Oxford, passed away, Saturday, December 24, 2016 at the Brethren Home Community in New Oxford. He was the husband of Opal L. (Shaw) Gebhart to whom he was married 65 years. Born February 2, 1930 in Adams County, he was the son of the late Paul M. and Viola M. (Smith) Gebhart. Bob was retired as Principal from Carroll County Vo-Tech. He was a 1948 graduate of Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown, a member of Sacred Heart Basilica in Edgegrove, McSherrystown Moose, McSherrystown Knights of Columbus, Hanover Home Assoc., Littlestown VFW and Eagles, Hanover American Legion, and a life member of McSherrystown Home Assoc., SAVES and the McSherrystown Fish & Game Assoc. Bob proudly served his country in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Bob was very proud of the students he mentored in the speech competitions. He enjoyed raising "show rabbits" and received many awards over the years but mostly he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Larry E. Gebhart and his wife Rose of Littlestown, Paula M. Koenig and her companion Brent Sponseller of Wilmington NC, and Dennis Gebhart and his wife Dianne of Littlestown; six grandchildren, Lee Gebhart, Rebecca Williamee, Sarah, Kimberly, Gretchen, and David "Buddy" Gebhart; two great-grandchildren, Clay Martin and Lucas E. Gebhart. He was preceded in death by three children, Leo, Lee and Theresa Gebhart. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, December 29, 2016, at Sacred Heart Basilica in Edgegrove, with Rev. Joseph R. Howard as celebrant. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery with military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Friends and relatives will be received Wednesday 6 to 8 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown, with a prayer service held at 8 pm. Serving as pallbearers will be his six grandchildren. Memorial contributions in memory of Bob may be made to Sacred Heart Basilica, 55 Basilica Drive, Hanover, PA 17331.
