Robert R. Green, 89, of Front Royal, Va., died Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Center in Winchester, Va.

Born in Westminster, he was the son of the late Ray C. and May L. Green. He was the husband of Caroline Danner Green, his wife of 66 years.

Following high school graduation, he entered the Navy in 1943 and served in World War II on a landing ship tank. He participated in invasions of Anzio Beach, Italy, the Island of Elba, and Southern France.

After his discharge, he served as a freelance carpenter. In 1958 the family moved from Westminster to Washington, D.C., where he took the position of superintendent of building and grounds on the new campus of Wesley Theological Seminary. He retired from Wesley in 1985.

He enjoyed woodworking, furniture making and gardening. Leading up to and during his retirement years, he delighted in owning and restoring a 200-year-old farm house on 20 acres in Paris, Va., where he enjoyed times with his grandchildren with tractor rides, baseball games and fishing. He liked history and sharing information with others.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a sister, Mildred Davis, of Hanover, Pa.; sons Michael Green and wife Linda, of Fairfax, Va., and Bradley Green, of Linden, Va.; daughter Linda Misewicz and husband Mark, of Crescent City, Calif.; grandchildren Kimberly Basha and husband Arif, of Alexandria, Va., Kevin Green, of Reston, Va., Jennifer Poe and husband Nathan, of Gainesville, Va., Jeffrey Green, of Fairfax, Rachel Funderburk, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Sharla Klingel and husband Martin, of Charlottesville, Va., Troy Post and Sarah Lane, both of Stanardsville, Va., Jennifer Taylor and husband Mark, of Warrenton, Va., Jessica Thornton and husband Josh, of Gainesville, Matthew Green, of Remington, Va., and Nathaniel Green, of Linden; and great-grandchildren Rayan and Zerin Basha, Joey Funderburk, and Allen and Lauren Klingel.

He was predeceased by siblings Madeline Strawsburg, Ruth Nightingale, Blanche Honig and Edith Ecker.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service, 3 p.m. Friday at Front Royal United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Heaton and Dr. David McAllister-Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
